Production Journal

In this second week of production, our editor was able to edit 1:30 of B-Role footage, which is great and also our PE says we are ahead of the class which is great. We have all done an excellent work because Manuel was absent and we all replaced him for the time that he was absent to class and we all were very compromised.

Also I with the help of Ernesto where able to compose a serious of questions, 10 good and eloquent questions. This questions where perfect for a documentary because the most  important thing is not the question, but it is the answers we get from the general population.

Our editor and and I were working on the shot list and with exactitude places we are going to be shooting and places we shall may scout. This is a very important step for the group to have an idea of what we re going to do.

As an overall,
my conclusion of the group is that we are trying to the best of our potential some more than others, but we are employing all our skills on this project and also the more important learning in the process, after all this is our first time on the topic, even doe we are tying to be the more professionals as we can be.

Production Journal

During this week, we have presented our finally rough cut of the documentary like all the other groups (moon light prod. and skin prod.). This helped us a lot for the develop of our film because as seen the other works we take lots of new good ideas and also we notice lots of essential things that we have to put that we don't. During this week we decided the roll of each one in the group in what we are going to do for this final cut. Ernest was absent during this week but we all ready assign his roll that was to make the subtitles, so today I will make me responsible of calling him and ask him if he is going to do it, because if not I will do it with some help of Thomas that haves really good spelling and could help me with the spelling mistakes. We take to long doing the subtitles because we have no idea of what parts would appear in the film because of the editing. As we were editing we were cutting and replacing scenes and shoots.
I think this was a very good week, because we have time during the film classes to organize our selfs and now we all now what we have to do and if we complete all the things that we must add to the film, it haves lots of possibilities to be one of the best. I also think that during all this weeks of production each member of our group work really hard for this project and we all do our best. All the weeks we complete our tasks and we markedly advanced quicker than all the other groups because of the great knowledge of Thomas and also the great attitude that he has put to this film doing the fantastic art of magic that is the editing. I also think we all take very seriously this work.
During all this productions week, apart of all the other work that I done, the most important for me were the the new ideas and effects that I said to Thomas to put in the video. Also Manuel and I make a really good research about this topic that we have chosen and we find lot of good stuff, as for example really good b-roll footage and information (we could notice this, add the beginning of the film, also in some parts during and at the end of the film) like we could see the at the beginning the shots of the car crashes, during the film w could see the car moving trough the city, and at the end in the final shot when we see the grave with the flowers and the rain. This was very easy to make because we have the camera on during all the filmation day, what make us to have the possibility to choosing what scenes were good and not putting the only ones that we have. Also Ernest make a good work because he was in charge of choosing the places were we were going to film, and he did a really good job in that.

Seven

Summary of Notes:

After we have saw the beginning  of the movie (Seven), we could see many factors. One factor that was very important in the movie was, the cold bluish colors reflecting alienation and technology, which creates a really good effect in the shoot and this make the film more Neo Noir and we could see  in the shot from Seven how cold and clinical the feel is. Also another factor that is very present to give to the film a felling of a distorted, chaotic world lacking moral clarity where the Dutch and Low angles.

Production Journal

The las week during school lessons of film studies, we all sit in our groups. We were the most advance group of the class. That was because on the they we have to film, we film lots of things and great things. Because we have lots of footage Tomas with his knowledge could make some fantastic editing so we could finish a rough rough-cut. Also during film lesson we name who was the one in charge of transcribing the footage.

Production Journal

In this first week, the team has made more than what I was expecting that we would do. We completed the research that we have planed to do, and that, made me feel happy, because that makes me have a feeling of compromise from each one of the group.

Also Tomas is organizing some interviews with his trainer and the owner of a "remiseria". We also where planing what to film, and the editor was creating 1.30 minutes of B-Role footage introduction. Also with Ernesto and Manuel, we all  where thinking about which questions we were going to ask, and if we were going to ask different questions to each one of them.

As an over all of this week, I think that if we continue like this, we could clearly be one of the best groups and also be the group that is ahead of the class

“Super Size Me”

  1.  Voice Over of the questions + answers of several people, and Vice Over again introducing people by showing paintings, pictures and news from the newspapers.
  2.  It’s not necessary, interview can respond as long as it is a clear statement.
  3. They were medium shots and in some cases medium-low angle shots. People look at the interviewer. Level shots / variety of positions.
  4. During the interview the camera shots are still.
  5. The positioning of the interview is quite good because the interviewed people is looking at the interviewer and some times they look at the camera, also they were in a place that identify the interviewed people (office, street, etc…)
  6. They give short and essential information getting to a point. They talk about what have they do in the past, how big were the things in the fast-food restaurants (Mc Donald, Burger King, etc…) and the problems that they bring to the society

Quentin Tarantino

1) The dialogue on his films are of extreme violence and also the shots. Also a very distinctive feature of Tarantino films is that mixes up features from the past and with the present.

2) Tarantino wasn´t a student, he learned from his craft days and video clerk days.

3) It was critized in 1992 by many because it used ultra-violent scenes. Also because the people said that it was kind of a copy from King Kong´s movie, City On Fire.

4) Crime and gangster films.

5)

The Trunk POV Shot

Here appear In Death Proof, Zoe and Kim looking under the hood of Jasper's 1970 Dodge Challenger. This is a low angle shot that is good to show the facial expressions of the characters during the opening of the trunk.

6) “The Mirror Shot”

This shot shows Vincent Vega in Mia Wallace's bathroom, In Pulp Fiction. This type of shot make you feel that the character is alone in the bathroom.

7)

A)  A Mexican Standoff is the name given to the shot that shows to or more persons shooting each other with their guns

B)  The Mexican Standoff term comes from the movie "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," of Sergio Leone in 1966

A) The Mac Guffin element is the one that drives the movie´s plot forward without having a specific relevance on its own.

B)  In Pulp Fiction, activates the action but don´t have any further purpose.

C) Eleven: All the movie is based in stole a bank, and they do a plan to have the gold egg.

"Capturing the friedmans"

  1. Before filming a movie like "Capturing the Friedmans" you would need complete some activites to make this documentary (pre-production). You would need to get in contact (organise some interview) with the detectives and lawyers that were involved in this case. Also you need a good background research. Primary sources, fotographies, recips.
  2.  Film Footage: The people who appeared in the film footage were the Firedman family members and the victims, abuser himself. They were filming house, around crime scenes.
  3. In this documentary, they were use post-production activities such as in the editing they add the old videos of the family, with the new filming that they have produce recently. Also they were added music after filming to create a better effect on the viewer. I think it wasnot used anarrator because it was inessesary because it havesa good plot.
  4. They were a tipical normal american family, part of the middle class. Trust in30 year old experienced teacher.

    Toto Productions Pitch

    What We are Doing?

Toto Productions are presenting a film pitch for filming how serious the driving situation has came to in Argentina. Showing the crashes, Confirmed facts, and interviews form both the law and the people of Argentina.

    Why We Are Doing IT?

We are doing this documentary, because the driving in this country had gotten to a great extreme and its time for people to know and realize the intensity of the situation.

    How will we do it?

We will film this in many different locations helping to give and all around show of what happens when it comes to driving and their conduct. We will show the opinions of the people through interviews and show through our own filming what the truth is.

    Logo

    Mise-En-Scene St Georges College

For the mise-en-scene task Ramiro, Sabrina and I had to show though out a still or a series of shots how we felt about the school. The ideas of owr feelings when we see this image, as a symbol of knolegde and wisdom and also a very preety school.  The prep school, before we maked this shot, we were thinking of anything else, but when we saw this image, we thought "whyt dont we do this" because we thought it was very beautifull and simbolic. So we made a scheme of our shot , with all the nature around it. Our shot is a long shot, this is better for capting all the building and also is middle angle shot.

    Summary of editing:

The filmmaking is involved with the combination and selection of the shots into sequences. This is a unique art in the cinema where the editor make the effect for the viewer, that is so engaged to the story that doesn’t realizes about what has been changed. This is called the "invisible art".
The film editor must know how to tell a story, be politically savvy when working with directors and studio executives, and have a calm and confident demeanor. Millions of dollars of film and the responsibility of guiding the picture through post-production and into theaters rest in the editor's hands. Scenes may have been photographed poorly and performances might have been less than inspired, but a skilled and creative editor can assemble the film so that the audience will never see these imperfections.
The film editor, working with the director, shaped the scene into its final form. After hours and hours of reviewing the unedited film, he created this one-minute scene.
Cuts and Transitions: Assembling the Scene
Editors select sounds and images from all the film that has been shot and arrange them to make the movie. They also plan how one shot will best transition to the next. There are dozens of possible transitions the editor can choose, each of which will create a different feeling.
Editing often begins as soon as film has been shot. Early scenes are assembled for the producer and director to view. Occasionally, the actors will also view these early scenes.
The first cut of a film, called a "rough cut," takes up to three months to complete. The Sometimes the editor works alone, sometimes with the director. The sound designer and music composer join them for the final cut.
Today most editors use computers or nonlinear digital editing systems to compile a film. The editor arranges the work print, and then creates an edit decision list that will be passed on to the negative matcher.

    “Strangers” film review

From the three different short films that we saw in class I Hill talk about “Strangers” because I think it was the most shocking and interesting movie of the three short films. On this film you could see the Nazis or also called actually Neo-Nazis. The film takes place in the subway in which at some point after they climbed up the two principal characters 4 Nazis entered to the subway, and they see the two other guys, one that was Jew and the other one that seemed to be also Jew. There you could see by the look of all of the Nazi characters eyes that they wanted to kill them, but working together as a team they could escape from there.
Because there was no dialogue in the movie and remarked stress and thanks to the tone and volume of the music it can produce a grater attention and suspense in each part of the movie. Another thing to note is the different takes on the faces of the characters that show what they are feeling such as fear of the two Jews to the Nazis when the Nazis came into the subway. In the movie there are greater numbers of close-ups. The most impressive were the shots of the faces of the Nazis showing their anger and hatred towards the Jews. Also when they show the tattoos and earrings that does show that the strange people had caused more fear. The movie is constantly filmed with close shots what it could show that only appears one person only in each shot. In few parts of the movie you could see more than one people in a scene.
In conclusion I can say that this is a very good movie, which needs no characters with dialogue to understand it. Has an excellent editing, esenography and which weapon a great movie. I recommend this movie for aver 15 year old people because at that age you are really capacitated to understand the movie and enjoying it.

French Impressionist Cinema (1918-1929) Friday, March 11, 2011

    1) Find two images for French impressionist paintings.

Give brief caption with name, artist, date. Explain briefly the important characteristics of French Impressionism.

Characteristics of Impressionist paintings include visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles.

    - Van Gogh Still Life Vase with Zinnias 1888.

    2) Three outside factors that influenced the rise of French Impressionist cinema?
    Explain in your own words.

After WW1 there was an economic decrease in France (and all the rest of the world) which led cinema went down, so French Impressionist movies had to come up with new ideas to make this theme popular worldwide.
    3) Describe three or more important technical aspects of French Impressionist Cinema (i.e. use of camera, editing, sets, lighting, narrative, etc.)

Camera use: different angles were used such as a close ups. High and low angles and movement.
Mise-en-scene: low lighting, use of shadow shots. Also arrangement of movement in a specific subject.
Optical Devices: such as the use of magic, mirrors. Enfficise significant details that gave the film key meanings and details to think about.
    4) Find information on two important film directors in French Impressionist Cinema from 1918-1929: name, photo, major films, interests or concerns shown in films.

    Name: Abel Gance.
Major Films: Victoire de Samothrace, La Digue (ou Pour sauver la Hollande).
Interest in sound films when came out, interested in telling stories, for example filmingVénus aveugle  after the invasion on France in 1940, to give hope to the French.

    Name: Jean Renoir.
Major films: On purge bébé (Baby's Laxative, Le Crime de Monsieur Lange).
Grand Illusion (La Grande Illusion) one of his best known films. It was about series of escape attempts by French POWS. It was very successful, but became more successful because it was banned from Germany. He was very opened and filmed all over the world.
